This week:  Reflect

Since this is our last full week of school, I thought it would be a great time to let you share what you've been doing since March 13, how you're feeling about starting high school and just check in with your peers.

Use the flipgrid code below to record a video and check in with your peers.

This week:  Growth vs. Fixed Mindset

This week we are reviewing growth vs. fixed mindset.  You will have a chance to watch a short video reviewing growth vs. fixed mindset, answer a few questions, read an article about how to tell your story, and answer some discussion questions.

Growth Mindset

Hint:  After watching the video, click on one of the links located to the right of the video (think, dig deeper, discuss, and finally).

This week:  Time management

For the last few weeks, our lessons have focused on preparing for high school (getting organized and setting goals).  We will continue with this theme this week as we take a close look at improving our time management.  Managing your time well will help you stay organized and focused on your short and long term goals.

Use the following link to access this week's lesson:
Time Management

1.  Look for Optional Activities 2020
2.  Choose the Time Management folder and complete activities

When you finish, you should continue working on Typing.com to improve those typing skills.

This week:  Goal Setting

Your task this week is to learn to use goal setting as an organizational tool and a way to achieve success.  Although these skills do not come naturally to many of us, the more we practice them, the easier they become.  Goals are your roadmap to success and will help you stay organized and focused as you work toward them.

1.  Click on the following link to complete this week's lesson:
 Goal Setting

2.  Choose Optional Activities and then Executive Functions:  Goal Setting

3.  Email your completed activity to me.

This week: Developing New Habits

This week's assignment encourages you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.  We've been focusing on organization, but that includes time management and scheduling tasks and activities into your day.  Watch a short TED talk video, answer a few questions, read an article and make some decisions about what new habit or activity you plan to focus on for the next 30 days.

Click on the link below (in purple) to complete this week's assignment.  You must use your first and last name to submit responses.

Developing Habits

1.  Watch the video
2.  Click on Think to answer a few questions about the video
3.  Click on Dig Deeper to read a short article
4.  Click on Discuss to answer some questions about your new habits

This Week:  Organization Continued

This week's assignment requires you to take a hard look at your own organizational skills.  While it is difficult to be organized 100% of the time, it is not impossible to be organized.  It take practice, patience, and, most importantly, finding the organizational methods that work best for you.  For example:  I love making lists when I have a large number of tasks to complete, but lists drive my daughter crazy.  She says they make her more stressed.  Her organizational methods are very different than mine, and that's ok.  This is a great time to figure out what works for you and what doesn't.  Pick an organizational method or style and begin using it now.  Practice, practice, practice (just like learning a sport or a new instrument) and eventually it will become habit.  Your activity for this week can be found under Files and Documents under the Optional folder, Organization, Week 3 Lesson.

Reminder:  You can always work on Typing.com in the Clever app to continue practice your typing skills.

This Week:  Focus on Organization

Students,

Since the focus of our class has been preparation for high school, this is a great time to hone your organization skills in preparation for success in high school.  Organization is personal to everyone; not everyone organizes in the same way and that is ok.  In order for you to stay organized long-term, you need to discover what works best for you.

Your Task:

Complete the Organizational Style Survey located in the optional activities folder on this page.  Read about your organizational style and the tips associated with your style.  Choose at least 2 tips and begin implementing them in your day.

I have also uploaded a powerpoint for you regarding organization, why it's important and areas of your life that may need some organizational help.

We will continue with organizational tips and ideas next week.  Remember, it's a process and developing good habits takes time.  Be patient with yourself and practice, practice, practice... :)

April 13, 2020

Hello Students,

I hope you are all well and finding ways to stay healthy, happy and safe.  I miss seeing you and working with you at school.  This new school format is a big adjustment and I am happy to help in anyway I can.  If there is anything you need, please feel free to reach out to me by email and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Our class times have been designated to occur on Wednesdays from 10am - 11:30 am and my office hours for this class are Wednesdays from 1:30pm - 3pm.  Each week I will be uploading a new lesson and materials related to topics covered in class this semester, including career and personality exploration, growth mindset, goal setting, and organization.  Although your designated time to complete the lesson and activities is 10am - 11:30am on Wednesdays, I will upload the materials every Monday so you are able to complete the lessons at a time to works best for you and your family's schedule.

This week:

Task 1

I am looking for students who would like to make a short video for the counseling department regarding your thoughts and advice to current 7th grade students on transitioning to the high school grading scale in 8th grade.  Think about how long it took to adjust, the impact it had on your overall grades, and adjustments you had to make to transition to the new grading scale.  If you are interested, please email me as soon as possible.  This is optional, but your help is appreciated.

Task 2

I am also looking for students who would like to make a short video for the counseling department offering advice/helpful tips for incoming 8th graders on ways to achieve success in 8th grade.  Some ideas might include topics covered in this class:  organization, goal-setting, growth mindset, asking for help when needed, etc...  Again, this is optional, but your help is appreciated.  If you are interested, please email me as soon as possible.

This Week's Lesson:  Reviewing the Holland Code

1.  Watch the Holland Code video

2.  Take the Holland Code inventory (especially if you can not remember your Holland Code)

3.  Complete the worksheet found on the files and documents page in the Optional Folder (week 1 assignment)

I will check in with all of you on Wednesday.  In the meantime, please email me with your thoughts on tasks 1 and 2.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Brooks
