Virtual Schedule - 2020

Instruction - Tuesdays - 8:30-10:00am
Office Hours - Fridays - 1:30-3:00pm

I will be responding to emails and checking all Flipgrids daily.

Instructional hours will be used for me to explain Flipgrid assignments and details as well as answer questions via Zoom meetings. Each grade will have its own regular Zoom meeting. Topics of each Zoom meeting will be posted here weekly. If you lost the meeting ID or password, please email me.
8th Grade - Tuesdays - 8:30-9:00am
7th Grade - Tuesdays - 9:00-9:30am
6th Grade - Tuesdays - 9:30-10:00am

Office hours will be used for students who would like small group attention. The schedule of office hours will be emailed out on Friday mornings with Zoom meeting credentials. Priority will be given to the most popular topics, then in order of submission. If I cannot accommodate you in this week's office hours I will reach out to you via email to try and answer your question.

Click Here to request to schedule office hours.

The best thing you could do for our your music education is to practice everyday. The more Flipgrids you submit, the more feedback you will receive. Use the topics on Flipgrid to guide your initial practicing. After you have mastered the assignments on Flipgrid, please seek out more music to further your skills. You may work ahead in your book, try an older grade's Flipgrids, find music you would be interested in learning, or email me for more suggestions.

***Reminder: All 4th quarter work is optional. Your family's health and safety is my top priority. Please stay safe.

Month at a Glance: March 16 - April 14, 2020

Each grade level has been given four Flipgrid assignments to work on over this month. Some assignments are familiar, others are an extension of something we have previously worked on, and a couple are brand new. I have recorded examples of each assignment on every instrument that can be found in your respective Flipgrids. If you have lost your music, or if the assignment is new, you can find the music under the Music tab of this page. Students should be able to figure out new material on their own. If not, YouTube has several videos that can assist in explaining or demonstrating specific skills and assignments.

It is my expectation that students will continue to practice daily. I understand that not everyone was able to get their instruments, and not all families have regular access to internet or technology, therefore these assignments will not be graded during the 3rd quarter. These assignments will be officially assigned during the 4th quarter, so I suggest that students use their time now to get ahead and begin to work on these tasks (some of which are quite difficult). If I get access to the band room, I will let you know as soon as possible so you can arrange to come in and collect your instrument. As of now, all PWCS buildings/facilities are closed. When we are given directions for 4th quarter instruction, and if we are continued to be denied access to the building, I will come up with a plan for continued learning for students without their instruments.

Please feel free to email me with any questions. I will happily explain via email or by recording another video on Flipgrid.

Additionally, the Recruiting Flipgrids can be accessed using the flip code: bullrunband. Students should watch the videos of their peers in the grade level above them to get more information on band next year. The scheduling process will happen very quickly when we return. If there are any questions about band next year, feel free to post them in the correct Flipgrid.

***Clarification: There are no new assignments for the 3rd quarter. All 3rd quarter Flipgrids have been extended until April 17th. If you submit a late assignment, be sure to email me to ensure I grade it.

8th Grade:
-Concert A-flat Scale
-Concert G Scale
-Concert F Scale (Two Octaves)
-Chromatic Scale: F - F (Two Octaves)

Percussion, each scale is paired with the following rudiments respectively: Paradiddle, 7-Stroke Roll, 9-Stroke Roll. I suggest browsing YouTube to find some
instructional videos that go over specifics for each.

7th Grade:

-Concert E-flat Scale
-Chromatic Scale: B-flat - B-flat (One Octave)
-Furioso
-Magma

For Furioso and Magma, you must play along with the recording of each piece. Links to each recording can be found in each Flipgrid.
Woodwinds, you must perform two octaves for your E-flat Scale.
Percussion, with the E-flat Scale you must also perform the 7-Stroke Roll.

6th Grade:

-Slurs 2/Hugga Dugga Burr
-Concert B-flat Scale
-Dragonfire
-Chromatic Scale: B-flat - E

Slurs 2 can be found under the music tab.
Percussion, your exercise for this is called Hugga Dugga Burr. You are working on double bouncing or diddling. Browse YouTube for some helpful tips and tricks to multiple bounce strokes.
For Dragonfire, you must play along with the recording. A link to the recording can be found in the Flipgrid.
Do some research into the Chromatic Scale so you understand the basic concept before attempting to figure it out.

Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a restful summer vacation and are ready to jump back into the music world with the Bull Run Band! I'm back at school working hard to have the band room ready for you by the time you get back (HA! Yeah right... it's good to be hopeful).
After finishing some graduate coursework, and spending some vacation time with my family at our lake house in Connecticut, I began working with the Battlefield High School marching band. I have had so much fun getting to meet these wonderful students and if you want to see how much fun you (and/or your parent/guardian) can follow our adventures on Twitter and Instagram @BullRunBand. Following us gives you a chance to score some extra points for your class before the school year even starts. Working with their marching band has made me so excited to get back to work with all of our new and returning eagles.

8th Grade
I am so excited to get to work with you all again. I'm not sure what to expect from you this year, but I feel some surprises headed my way :)
We will not be playing on the first day of school, but we will be playing during our second class together. If you want first pick at lockers, you can bring your instrument on the first day and reserve your spot.
Get ready because we have to hit the ground rolling. Our first performance is on Friday, September 13th at Battlefield High School Marching Band's 8th Grade Night. We will get to meet the marching band, learn what it is like to be in the marching band, and even play with them in the stands! It is so much fun! If you still have your stands tunes from last year, now would be a great time to dust them off.
Also, if you have been practicing your All-County/All-District audition requirements, that bet is still on the table. If you complete a County/District audition for me before October you will receive a meal of your choice on behalf of the Bull Run Band and an extra summative A! Audition requirements can be found far down on this page. Get to practicing!

7th Grade

I told you I would try hard to get you four sections! Woo!
We will not be playing during our first class together. If you want first pick at lockers, you can bring your instrument in and reserve your spot. I would like to start playing during our second class together, so be ready to roll.
If you have been practicing your All-County/All-District audition requirements, that bet is still on the table. If you complete a County/District audition for me before October you will receive a meal of your choice on behalf of the Bull Run Band and an extra summative A! Audition requirements can be found far down on this page. Get to practicing!
If you do not yet know what instrument you will be playing this year, please email me ASAP at HauptCH@pwcs.edu to schedule an appointment to try out the different instruments and find your best fit. I have availabilities Tuesday (8/20) and Friday (8/23) this week.

6th Grade

Welcome to the Bull Run Band! I am so excited to see some of you again and meet the rest of you.
If you do not know what instrument you are playing yet, please email me at HauptCH@pwcs.edu to set up an appointment to try the remaining instruments to find the best fit for you.
While we will not be playing during our first week, I would like to start playing as soon as possible. If you do know what instrument you are playing, this week would be an excellent opportunity to rent your instrument if you have not done so already.

As always, please email me with any questions or concerns you may have. Hopefully, I will see you all on Thursday for the Teacher Meet and Greet/New Student Orientation. If not, I can't wait to see you next week. I hope your last week of summer is fun and relaxing.

Love,
Mr. Haupt

P.S. RIP Summer 2019

Happy Summer Vacation Band Family!

Thanks everyone for making my first year at Bull Run Middle School so great! Good luck 8th grade as you head off to high school. I can't wait to see you all again soon. And to those of you signed up for marching band at Battlefield, see you at band camp!

Rising 8th and 7th graders, remember to practice for your All County/District Audition for me in September to earn your reward! If you are not quite ready to tackle those requirements yet, practice in the book as far as you can make sound good. Play with the CD and with friends.

Rising 6th grade students, if you have not already come to tryout the different instruments it is very important that you email me (HauptCH@pwcs.edu) to schedule a time to come in over the summer and try them out so we can know what instrument you are playing this school year.

Remember to follow the band on Twitter @BullRunBand and don't forget to practice!

Your summer lovin' music teacher,
Mr. Haupt
