Information for Potential NJHS Members

(Current 7th graders – Rising 8th graders)

After a thorough review process, the NJHS committee evaluates students who might qualify to be part of the NJHS Club. Shortly after the end of Quarter 3, invitation letters and/or a Canvas invitation are sent to students who have met the qualifications to apply for next year’s NJHS program. 

 

About the National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

The National Junior Honor Society recognizes the outstanding achievements of our 7th (rising 8th graders) and 8th grade students. We are a service-oriented organization, dedicated to supporting Bull Run Middle School and our wider community. Through service, we strive to build leadership, strong character, and responsible citizenship in each of our members.

All candidates who are accepted and inducted as active NJHS Club members are expected to maintain their membership status by upholding the standards upon which they were selected. In addition, they must fulfill certain responsibilities and actively participate in NJHS activities.

Reminder: To be part of the National Junior Honor Society, students must demonstrate all 5 pillars:

📚 Scholarship
Scholarship means working hard in school, doing your best academically, being responsible with your learning, and striving for excellence in your studies.

👑 Leadership
Leadership means being a positive role model, helping others, taking initiative, making good decisions, and encouraging others to succeed.

💎 Character
Character means showing honesty, respect, responsibility, kindness, integrity, and doing the right thing even when no one is watching.

🏫 Citizenship
Citizenship means being a responsible member of your school and community by following rules, respecting others, and contributing positively to the environment around you.

🤝 Service
Service means helping others and giving your time, effort, or talents to make a positive difference in your school, community, or the lives of others.

(Members Only – 8th graders)

All candidates who are accepted and inducted as active NJHS Club members are expected to maintain their membership status by upholding the standards upon which they were selected. In addition, they must fulfill certain responsibilities and actively participate in NJHS activities.

  • Avoid discipline or behavior concerns

✨ NJHS Club Hour Requirements & Information ✨ 

  • Summer hours count! Be sure to record them on your hours sheet -they do count toward your yearly total. *Service Hour Sheet available in Canvas*.
  • Students should aim to complete 10 hours per semester (hours are due in December and April) for a total of 20 hours for the school year.
  • Students must complete 3 service hours that directly benefit BRMS.
  • Students must attend NJHS monthly meetings during Advisory.
  • All service hours must be submitted to Mrs. Shirsolkar (NJHS Adviser).

About

🌟National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) Induction Requirements 🌟

For induction into the National Junior Honor Society, rising eighth grade students must meet specific criteria. To be considered for NJHS, students must:

*Earn a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher (non-rounded) by the end of the 3rd quarter *Demonstrate excellence in the following areas:

  • Scholarship 📚
  • Leadership 👑
  • Character 💎
  • Citizenship 🏫
  • Service 🤝

In addition, students must: Be on or above grade level in all subjects Have been enrolled at Bull Run Middle School for at least one semester (two quarters)

  • Please note: NJHS is not just an honor roll. It is a student-led organization that recognizes outstanding qualities in young people and encourages members to continue developing these strengths through school service and community outreach.
  • Transfer Students: Students who were inducted into NJHS at another school may transfer their membership, as long as the 3.0 GPA requirement has been met. Eligible students should speak with Mrs. Shirsolkar for guidance.

Membership & Induction Ceremony: Students who are offered membership may choose to accept or decline the invitation. To officially join the Bull Run Middle School Chapter of NJHS, all inductees are required to attend the induction ceremony and pay a membership due $.

Service Requirements

🌟NJHS Community Service Hour Requirements 🌟

  • NJHS members are expected to complete a total of 20 hours of community service throughout the school year.
  • At least 3 of these hours must directly benefit Bull Run Middle School.

Presidential Volunteer Service Award: Students who go above and beyond the 20+ hour requirement may qualify for the Presidential Volunteer Service Award.

To be eligible: Students must complete 50+ service hours

🥉 Bronze: 50–74 hours

🥈 Silver: 75–99 hours

🥇 Gold: 100+ hours

✅ Approved Service Opportunities

  • 🏫 School events (Multicultural Night, Rising 6th graders Night, Assisting with Sports and PTO events)
  • ⛪ Service activities completed through Scouts, Church groups, Temple, and/or place of worship
  • 🎉 Volunteering at local events (fun fairs, 5Ks, Haymarket Day, etc.)
  • 🌿 Park or trail clean‑up projects
  • 📚 Assisting with an elementary school after‑school club
  • 🥫 Hosting a food or clothing drive
  • 🍎 Helping a teacher (classroom organization or volunteering in the library)
  • 🧩 Assisting with the Best Buddies club or class
  • 🏫 Attending NJHS meetings (you will only be able to earn 3 hrs. here – this is excluding the 3 hrs. to Bull Run MS)

🚫 The Following Do NOT Count for Service Hours

  • 💵 Any service for which you are paid $
  • 🏠 Household chores, helping family members or babysitting
  • 🏀 Participation on a sports team
  • ➕ Other non‑approved activities, etc.
